Mass Timber Construction Management: Design through Project Close Out
Innovations in mass timber construction are offering new opportunities for the building industry. Products such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber (glulam) combine multiple laminations of lumber to produce solid timber elements such as floor and wall panels, beams, and columns. These elements have high strength-to-weight ratios, allowing them to replace more traditional construction materials while providing sustainable systems that can meet code criteria for acoustics, fire-resistance, seismic performance, energy efficiency, and more. However, while design and code aspects of mass timber receive a great deal of focus, it is the construction aspects that often decide whether a project goes forward. Mass timber construction has similarities to other systems, but it also has unique attributes—and a complete understanding of the differences is key to efficient project cost estimation and efficient construction. This in-depth, multi-faceted workshop will explore mass timber from design through preconstruction, fabrication, erection, and project close-out. After setting the stage with an overview of mass timber products and sustainability attributes, discussion will focus on construction topics, including risk analysis, cost case studies design team interaction, cost optimization, scheduling, site planning, and other logistics. Intended for construction industry professionals looking to gain a deep understanding of the unique attributes of mass timber construction, this workshop will leave attendees with information they need to successfully bid and construct a mass timber project.
Ethan Martin, PE, WoodWorks
Ethan is a licensed engineer in several states with experience ranging from civil engineering and land development to residential, commercial, and educational building design. He earned a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University specializing in structures. As the previous owner of a structural engineering firm in North Carolina, Ethan has worked on projects that range from small renovations to a 470,000-square-foot, $125 million central school for the Cherokee Nation. He has also worked on national accounts such as Home Depot, Chili’s, McDonald’s and Honda.
Melissa Kroskey, AIA, SE, WoodWorks
A licensed Architect and Structural Engineer in the state of California, Melissa has over fifteen years of professional experience spanning architectural design, structural engineering, digital fabrication and public relations. She has a broad perspective on the industry and technical design expertise from seismic to hurricane regions. Melissa has worked on a variety of building types, including civic, educational, multi-family residential, luxury single-family residential, military, museums, and transportation facilities. She has collaborated with innovative fabricators and encourages designers to engage fabricators early in the design process. Melissa has a BS in Architectural Engineering and a BS in Civil Engineering from Drexel University and also studied architecture at SCI-Arc.
Greg Kingsley, PhD, PE, KL&A Engineers and Builders
Greg is the president and CEO of KL&A Engineers and Builders in Golden, Colorado, a firm of 95 that includes structural engineers, detailers, and construction managers. He enjoys working on innovative wood structures of all kinds, but especially in mass timber.
Erica Spiritos, Swinerton Builders
Erica has long been interested in the design of urban environments in ways that honor the natural resources on which our lives depend. Following her Civil & Environmental Engineering studies at Carnegie Mellon University, she worked on projects ranging from the design and fabrication of household-scale solar desalination systems for families in Gaza, to construction management of an industrial-scale drinking water treatment facility in New York City. In her previous position at Structurlam, Erica helped facilitate solutions to deliver eight mass timber projects, including both the tallest and largest CLT projects in the US. For Swinerton, she provides project-specific design expertise to support appropriate and optimal mass timber design. She leads estimating efforts, VD&C/BIM integration, and procurement of mass timber materials.
Brad Nile, Andersen Construction Co Inc.
As a lifelong builder and student of construction systems, Brad has made this the focus of his academic studies as well as world travels. In his 25 years with Andersen Construction, Brad has managed the construction of many landmark commercial and institutional buildings in Oregon, including the new mass timber projects at the Oregon State University College of Forestry as well as mixed use, mass timber projects in Portland Oregon. Brad lead the Andersen Construction teams that were responsible for estimating, procuring and erecting these structures. Coming from a family of forest landowners, Brad has a deep understanding of the timber industry and is passionate about the growing use of mass timber in institutional and commercial projects.
