A spanking new steel silo has recently been erected next to the wall of the Hanasaari coal-fired power plant in Helsinki’s Sörnäinen district.
The plant itself is still on a summer break, but the coal heap in the adjacent storage area is already at its maximum height, for Russian cargo vessels carrying coal have been frequent visitors to the site in anticipation of the coming winter’s power production tasks.
The silo, in turn, will be used for storing wood pellets, which the plant will start burning mixed in with coal in its boiler in a couple of months’ time.
