Sawmill workers strike at SierraPine

Workers at the SierraPine sawmill near Jackson in Amador County, unwilling to accept a contract with pay cuts and reduced benefits, have gone on strike.

They walked off the job Thursday at 3 p.m. and have been picketing around the clock at the entrances to the mill, which is in the small community of Martell.

SierraPine, headquartered in Roseville, employs about 65 workers at the particle board plant. Lumber and Sawmill Workers Local 2927, the union that represents the workers, has not been able to reach a new agreement with SierraPine since a previous contract expired at the end of May.
